formed at Notre Dame. I had great dif- ficulty to get thither. Coaches are not allowed to stir till all the processions, with which the whole town swarms, are over. The streets through which they are to pass in the way to the churches, are all lined with tapestry; or, for want of that, with ornaments of an inferior kind: I find that the better sort of people, les gens comme il faut, all go out of town on these days, to avoid the embarras of going to mass, or the ennui of staying at home.
Whenever the host stops, which fre- quently happens, the priests sing a psalm, and all the people fall on their knees in the middle of the street, whether dirty or clean. I readily complied with this ce- remony to avoid giving offence, or being remarkable. Indeed, when I went out, I determined to do as other people did, in the streets, and church, otherwise I had no business there.
