formed at Notre Dame. I had great dif-
ficulty to get thither. Coaches are not
allowed to stir till all the processions,
with which the whole town swarms, are
over. The streets through which they
are to pass in the way to the churches,
are all lined with tapestry; or, for want of
that, with ornaments of an inferior kind:
I find that the better sort of people, les
gens comme il faut
, all go out of town on
these days, to avoid the embarras of
going to mass, or the ennui of staying at
home.

Whenever the host stops, which fre-
quently happens, the priests sing a psalm,
and all the people fall on their knees in
the middle of the street, whether dirty or
clean. I readily complied with this ce-
remony to avoid giving offence, or being
remarkable. Indeed, when I went out,
I determined to do as other people did,
in the streets, and church, otherwise
I had no business there.
