During my first residence at Rome, I had so much to see, and so many en- quiries to make, relative to ancient music, and spent so much time in the Vatican and other libraries, that I had but little to spare for the modern; however, that little was spent much to my satisfaction, in hearing public performances in the churches, and private concerts in the houses of several professors, as well as persons of distinction. But as many days were spent here in much the same man- ner, to avoid repetition, I shall, for the present, drop the journal stile, and try to recollect the principal musical events which happened while I was at Rome, without attending to dates; and, in enumerating these I should think myself guilty of ingratitude, if I passed over in silence the countenance and assistance with which I was honoured by my own countrymen. I hope I shall therefore be pardoned the liberty of naming them oc- casionally, with the respect due to their
