Wednesday 18. I went this morning,
for the first time, to the Ambrosian Li-
brary, which, in size, appears but dimi-
nutive, after reading the accounts given of
it in books of travels, and after having seen
the Bibliotheque du Roi at Paris, which is,
at least, ten times as big; there is, in
fact, but one large room filled with
printed books, and two small ones for
French literature, printed and MS. then
a room full of copies only, of the best an-
cient statues at Rome and Florence; and,
lastly, a large hall or saloon, full indeed
of wonderful performances of the great-
est painters; among these are many ines-
timable works of Leonardo da Vinci, and
Jean Breugel, of Antwerp, the high fi-
nisher, whose four elements in this collec-
tion are said to have cost him his sight.
